The Tuscany wine region is located in western Central Italy and is one of the most venerable wine regions in the world. Tuscany has a total area of about 65,000 hectares under vines. Sangiovese is the speciality of the cultivation area and the most important grape variety in Tuscany. Great wines are for example Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and especially Brunello di Montalcino. The most important grape varieties are Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc in the red range, as well as Vernaccia, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Vermentino and Chardonnay in the white range. Another speciality are the so called "Super Tuscans", which are top wines of world format, but are designated as table wines, because their production does not comply with the strict DOCG guidelines and mostly contain unauthorized grape varieties. Well-known places in Tuscany are Montalcino, Montepulciano, Scansano or Bolgheri.

The Veneto wine region is located in north-eastern Italy and has a total vineyard area of about 75,000 hectares. Speciality of the area is among other things Prosecco (sparkling or sparkling wine, occasionally also still wine) from the white grape variety Glera. Amarone della Valpolicella in particular has a special position and reputation among the red wines, which can become enormously concentrated and weighty (up to 19% vol.) through further drying of the grapes after the harvest. The main white wines are Garganega, Pinot Grigio, Glera, Pinot Bianco, Friulano and Trebbiano. Among the red wines, Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara, Rondinella, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot predominate.

Trentino/South Tyrol

The Trentino/South Tyrol wine region is located in the north of Italy and has an area of about 15,000 hectares. What is special about the region is that there are often large cooperatives here (wineries or Cantina´s), which produce outstanding qualities despite large vineyards. Specialities are Vernatsch, in Germany also as Trollinger to be found, or Lagrein in South Tyrol and/or Teroldego in Trentino, which are all three red wine Weinrebsorten. Well-known places are Terlan, Kaltern, Bozen, Tramin or Trento. The most frequently cultivated white grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. The red grape varieties are Vernatsch (Trollinger), Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Lagrein, Teroldego, Marzemino, Lambrusco and Merlot.

The Piedmont wine region is located in north-western Italy and, together with Tuscany and Veneto, is one of the most traditional wine-growing regions in the country. The area has a total planted area of about 55,000 hectares, on which about 100 grape varieties are permitted. The two red grape varieties Barbera and Nebbiolo are the specialities of the area. Other important grape varieties are Bonarda, Dolcetto, Freisa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero and Grignolino for red wines, as well as Arneis, Cortese, Erbaluce, Moscato, Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco for white wines. Exceptional wines are Barolo or Barbaresco. Famous wine-growing places are for example Barolo, Roero, Barbaresco or Langhe.

The Campania wine-growing region is located in the environs of Naples and has a total vineyard area of approx. 41,000 hectares. Special features are the mountain slopes, which get a lot of sun and are influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. The soils are mainly of volcanic origin. Here mainly traditional red wine varieties are cultivated. Among the red varieties, Aglianico, Barbera, Greco Nero, Piedirosso, Primitivo and Sangiovese predominate, as do Falanghia, Greco Bianco, Coda di Volpe, Fiano and Asprinio among the white varieties. Well-known places in Campania are Naples, Benevento, Avellino, Amalfi or Pompeii.
